Daughter of Robert J. Shreeve and Ethel T. Meadows. Wife of Henry Gerhardt Liebeck. Sister of Madelyn Ousterhout.
Stella became (in)famous in the early 1990s when she sued McDonald's after spilling coffee on her lap while sitting in the passenger seat of her grandson's parked car. She suffered 3rd degree burns to 16% of her body and nearly died. A court later awarded her $2.9 million in damages. However, after a reduction of both compensatory and punitive damages, Stella was awarded $640,000. The case was appealed by both parties but ultimately settled out of court for less than $500,000.
Stella's daughter later stated that after her burns and the toll of court proceedings, her mother had no quality of life. She also stated that the money Stella received from the settlement paid for a live-in nurse.
