A professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, Miss Illman set up an experimental kindergarten class for teachers' observation at Penn State in 1916. She later founded the Illman School for Kindergarten-Primary Teachers and eventually merged with Miss Alice Carter to open the Illman-Carter School. The school became a part of the University of Pennsylvania in 1936, and it is now a division of the university's School of Education. Miss Illman was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and received her master's degree from Columbia University. Upon her retirement in 1946, she became a professor of education at Penn State and donated her school to the university. She was a member of Phi Lamda Theta national women's honor society, the Educational Alumni Association of the University of Pennsylvania, and Childhood Education Association. She is survived by a sister, Miss Ella Illman, a retired Pennsylvania school teacher; two nephews - Kirk I Thompson of Titusville and Francis Thompson of New York, NY; and a niece, Mrs Kirk Thompson of Titusville. The funeral service was held on Sept 15 in her home. Interment was in Mt Vernon Cemetery. The University of Pennsylvania flag was at half-mast on the day of Miss Illman's burial."
