Jean was active in all things Shelbyville, from civic beautification and renovation efforts to the annual Horse Show to her favorite cause, the Shelby County Community Theatre where she did everything from designing sets to fundraising and occasionally even acting. Jean was recognized and honored for her volunteer work when she was awarded Shelby County Citizen of the Year, but was always more comfortable working behind the scenes.
Jean and her husband Bob had a wonderful life together, playing bridge, golfing, watching their sports teams and traveling the world with friends. She won the club championship in Shelbyville 5 times. Jean was a talented portrait artist and arranger of flowers. She treasured her many friendships, including those revolving around the book club, garden club and weekly bridge games. After Bob's retirement, they spent their winters in Naples, often hosting their grandchildren. Despite the fact that Jean was a diehard U of L fan and Bob was all Big Blue, they remained happily married for 55 years, until Bob's death in 2012.
Besides her husband, Bob, Jean is predeceased by her parents, her beloved brother, Dr. Douglas Atherton (Louise), her brother-in-law, Howard Logan (Herma), and her sister-in-law, Ann Logan.
Jean is survived by her two adoring children, Dean Logan (Jacqui) of Raleigh, NC and Jill Jelsma (Franklin) of Louisville, her grandchildren, Harry, Sophie, and Jack Logan, and Henry and Logan Jelsma. Jean is also survived by her brother-in-law, Bill Logan, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her sweet poodle Jazz.
Visitation will be held Friday, December 14, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. at the family home in Shelbyville.
