Sarah Rebecca King was one of the 11 children born to the prominent East Tennessee family of Walter and Nancy Sevier King. Sarah is listed as an heir in Walter's 1830 will and she is also listed as an heir in an 1839 Roane County Court of Chancery report concerning that will. The latter document notes that Sarah King is "...now wife of Robert Kirkpatrick who resides in Anderson Co., TN."

Sarah did marry Robert M. Kirkpatrick, in Roane County, Tennessee, on March 3, 1835. Robert was born in Virginia in 1790 and moved with his family to Tennessee in 1792, where he became a Methodist Minister and farmer. He and Sarah had two children, Walter A. (1836 - 1906) and Sarah A. (1839 - 1920). The 1840 U.S. Census shows the family residing in Anderson County.

According to the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Censuses, the four family members continued to reside together, first in Roane County and then in Anderson County. Robert died in 1864 (age about 74), and was buried in the Ross Cemetery near the town of Clinton. The 1870 and 1880 U.S. Censuses show that Sarah and her two adult children continued to reside together on their Anderson County farm. It is interesting to note that Sarah's daughter did not marry until 1886 and her son Walter did not marry until 1887.

Sarah's birth year of about 1799 was estimated using the mode of her age information listed in the 1850 to 1880 U.S. Censuses. Her death year is less certain. She is listed in the 1880 U.S. Census and is referred to in the past tense in a bio of her son Walter published by the Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887. Using the median of these two data points it is estimated Sarah died about 1884. It is believed she is buried in Ross Cemetery with her husband and only son.

Concerning Sarah's middle name, Sarah applied for a widow's pension for Robert's military service in the War of 1812 and she signed the claim as Sarah Rebecca Kirkpatrick. She was also identified as Sarah R. in the U.S. Censuses reviewed for this bio. It is unknown why so many genealogy sources identify her as Sarah S.
