Jack LeRoy Montgomery, 92, born April 3, 1926 in Pueblo, Colorado, died on December 9, 2018 at the Floyd E. “Tut” Fann State Veterans Home in Huntsville, AL. The only child of John L. and Dorothy E. Montgomery, he spent his early childhood on a ranch high in the mountains of Colorado. The family moved to California in 1934 during the Great Depression. He attended school in Redondo Beach, CA, where he met his future wife. In June of 1944, the day after he graduated from Redondo Union High School, he reported for active duty in the US Navy. He served the last two years of WWII in the South Pacific on board an LST, participating in four major invasions.
Returning home, he began his college education at El Camino Community College, later graduating from Stanford University in 1950 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. He married Dorothy Jane Edwards on June 23, 1950 in Inglewood, CA and began his career in the Aerospace industry. In 1965, he took a two year transfer to Huntsville, AL to participate in the Space Program that successfully landed Neil Armstrong on the moon. Wishing to remain in Huntsville, he changed careers and became a Life Insurance agent. He worked for Equitable, AFLAC, and other insurance agencies before forming his own insurance, estate, and financial planning company, J. Noral and Associates.
Jack loved the woods of North Alabama. A Scoutmaster for several years, he taught his scouts respect for nature along with camping skills. He was an active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Huntsville. He belonged to a number of organizations including Toastmasters International, the Heritage Club, the Wee Dram Society, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed woodcarving and volunteered at the Botanical Gardens and with the Senior Center Meals on Wheels.
Being of Scottish descent, he was very active in the Tennessee Valley Scottish Society. He and Dorothy enjoyed their travels throughout all 50 states and around the world. In his later years he attended the OSHA Lifelong Learning Institute at UAH and as a result published “A Hop Skip and a Jump and Look Where I Landed”, his life story. He loved reading and good conversation – on just about any subject.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Dorothy; children, Jay Montgomery (Kin), Dean Montgomery, and Gail Wills (Lynn); five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 15 at First Christian Church, Huntsville, AL, with the Rev. Paul Allen officiating. A reception will follow. There will be a private family burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS, 66675-8516.
