James was born October 9, 1932 in Moweaqua, the son of Floyd and Evelyn (Rodman) Dial. He married Nadine Perryman November 28, 1954 in Moweaqua. She survives.
James was a member of First Christian Church, where he served in many leadership areas over the years. He was retired from A.E. Staley Manufacturing Company after forty years of service and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, Nadine; son, Chris Dial of Moweaqua; daughters, Jill (Randy) Knight and Peggy Baker, all of Moweaqua; grandchildren, Clayton, Ryan, Eric, Hannah and Tori; six great-grandchildren and sister, Gloria Jean (Denny) Durbin of Decatur, Illinois.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and one sister.
