Shirley Owens passed away from this earthly life on Dec. 8, 2018, to begin her new life in a place of comfort, peace and joy.

Shirley Louise Lang was born in Torrington on July 9, 1927, to Edward Lang and Evalyn Allen Lang, while the family was living on a homestead near Jay Em. She received her schooling in country school in the Prairie Center area until she transferred to attend high school in Torrington, where she graduated in 1945.

She worked for a time as a nurse’s aide. She was married to her lifelong husband, Robert Allen Owens, on Feb. 1, 1948 in Lusk. They were blessed to celebrate 70 years of marriage in 2018. They began their married life on the Owens family ranch near Lusk, where they farmed and ranched until ill health forced them into a nursing home.

Two children were born to the couple: Lanette, in 1949 and Terry in 1950. Her main occupation during the 1950’s and 1960’s was as a farm wife and mother with all the hard work, dedication, and responsibility that job entails. During that time, she also worked as a reception/secretary/accountant in a doctor’s office and for the Niobrara County ASC office to help support the family. She also worked many years as a bookkeeper for Texaco and Bulk Plant.

She was a very self-sacrificing person who was willing to give of herself and lend a hand to others, often putting other’s needs ahead of her own. Her kind, caring, selfless nature endeared her to many people throughout the years. Her family and many friends will remember all the good meals she cooked, the delicious baked goods she made, and the hospitality she always showed, making anyone feel welcome.

Her family was her pride and joy and she was always there for them in more ways than can be counted. Many occasions and celebrations were spent with family and friends enjoying good times and making lasting memories. She loved to play pinochle and belonged to pinochle clubs for many years.

At the time of her passing she was residing in the Niobrara County Nursing Home along with Bud. She was dearly loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Shirley is survived by her husband Bud and children Lanette of Spearfish, S.D., and Terry of Rio Rancho, N.M. She has three grandchildren, Christea (Nate Reiser), Garth and Reeve (Abby) and seven great-grandchildren, Skyler, Nick, Amy, Spencer, Bella, Aria and Ivy.

She was preceded in death by her father Edward and mother Evalyn.
