Army Spc. Cagle was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia. Cagle died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit in Ramadi. Daniel grew up in the unincorporated Del Aire area in California. He was a wild and crazy teenager who ended up attending several campuses before finishing up at Casa by the Sea in Ensenada, Mexico – a tough program for teens with behavioral issues. He knew the risks of being in the military when he enlisted three years ago but wanted to follow a family tradition of enlisting. Daniel deployed overseas in January and was able to return home for a brief leave in April. He wasn't ready to return to Iraq, but said, "I have my friends there. They are my second family and I've got to watch out for them." He was leading his men on a patrol near Ramadi in search of insurgents when a bomb exploded after entering a house. The blast critically injured Daniel, instantly killed Staff Sgt Steve Butcher, Jr., and threw the rest of the team back. He died in a helicopter over Balad on his way to a hospital. Daniel saved the rest of his team's lives that night by being the one up front. He cared too much about the rest of his men to let anyone else past him.
