He died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit in Ramadi, Iraq. He graduated from Penfield High School in Penfield, New York in 1997 where he participated in wrestling. He last returned home for a visit in November then returned for his third tour of duty in Iraq in January. Steve was devoted to his men and wanted to do everything to ensure their safety – he felt personally responsible.
Interment on June 5, 2007.
