Virgil grew up on the family farm and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II where he was stationed in the Philippines, then Japan, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He started working for The Tappan Stove Company in 1946, retiring in 1986 following 40 years of service. He later worked for Hawkin’s Market as a baker for five years. Virgil was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the VFW, and also served on the State Highway Auxiliary Patrol
Virgil married Sue Schwab in 1954, and together they raised their children until her death in 1983. He was fortunate to find companionship again with his second wife, Lee Hendrickson, whom he married in 2001. Virgil made friends with everyone he met and kept busy helping others fix or build things. He also enjoyed ballroom dancing in his twilight years with Lee.
He is survived by his wife, Lee Hendrickson Jones; two children, Jeffrey Schwab (Judy) Jones and Ann Marguerite Jones; a granddaughter, Samantha Schwab Jones; two step sons, James (Betty) Hendrickson and Lewis (Cecelia) Hendrickson; four step grandchildren; nine step great grandchildren, three step great great grandchildren; a sister, Flossie Poff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sue Schwab Jones; and ten siblings.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 21, 2018 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Pentti Maki. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., at the church on Friday.
