Major Daniel James Campion, Jr., USAF, was born and raised in Flushing/Queens New York to Detective Daniel J. Campion and Gertrude "Gert" Campion (Dolan). Major Campion had one brother, Thomas, who was four years younger and was also in the USAF. Major Campion was married to Marilyn F. Carpenter, from Detroit, Michigan and together they had four children; Kathleen, Daniel III, Mary and Patrick. Major Campion studied at Fordham University in New York City where he majored in Political Science before entering the USAF in the mid 1950's. Major Campion was assigned to the 351st Bomb Squadron (Medium), 100th Bomb Wing, Strategic Air Command at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth New Hampshire.

Sadly on December 8th 1964, at approximately 12:30AM his B-47E jet bomber crashed shortly after take-off in Newington New Hampshire. In addition to claiming the life of Major Campion the following members of his crew were also killed; co-pilot Captain Truman Burch age 28, Navigator Major John R. North age 30, Observer Captain Bennie Ward Forrester age 27.
