Wayne R. Carpenter, 92, of Decatur, IN passed away Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Adams Memorial Hospital. He was born on Thursday, November 11, 1926 in Fort Wayne, IN the son of the late Enoch E. Carpenter and the late Gladys (Heller) Carpenter.

He married Anita M. Lindemann on December 13, 1958 in Bluffton, Indiana and she preceded him in death on April 10, 2006. In May 2008, he married Patricia (Barkley) Morgan and she preceded him in death on October 30, 2010.

Wayne served his country in the United States Army during WWII in the Philippines.

Wayne was a graduate of Huntertown High School. He retired in 1996 from the City of Decatur with 25 years of service as the water superintendent and city engineer. Wayne enjoyed his family, golfing, watching westerns, and deer hunting in Pennsylvania.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur and the Holy Name Society. Wayne was also a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus member, a life member of the V.F.W. #6236 in Decatur and a member of the American Legion Post #43 in Decatur. In his later years, he was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Survivors include his three sons, Eric Gehrig of Decatur, IN, William (Amber) Carpenter of Decatur, IN, Christopher (Kelly) Carpenter of Decatur, IN; a daughter, Victoria (Jan) Nussbaum of Monroe, IN; brother, Richard Carpenter of Columbia City, IN; brother, Donald (Janette) Carpenter of Huntington, IN; five grandchildren, David Gehrig, Chad (Sarah) Nussbaum, Shelly Nussbaum, Renn (Ashley) Carpenter and Christopher Malone and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his brother Glen Carpenter, sister-in-law, Juanita Carpenter and one grandson, David Malone.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with Father Dave Ruppert officiating. Interment will follow in the Decatur Cemetery in Decatur, Indiana with Military Graveside Services to be conducted by the American Legion Post #43 colorguard.

Friends will be received from 2-8 p.m., Monday, December 10 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, Indiana and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. A Holy Rosary will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
