Nancy Baum was born May 31, 1846 in Tiffin, Ohio and died at the home of her son, Thomas Erwin Black of Scranton, Kansas, May 9, 1925, at the age of age of 79 years 11 months 4 days. She was united in marriage to John David Black October 21, 1868 and eight children, four boys and four girls were born to this union. One daughter, Ida Ann died in infancy. The husband and father died Nov. 18, 1909 at Stormont in Topeka. The other children all survive their mother. June 21, 1921 she was married to E. E Aley, of Topeka who died April 12, 1925.
The surviving immediate relatives are four sons, Calvin Clifford Black, Bannie Buford Black, and Thomas Erwin Black, of Scranton; John Wesley of Iowa; three daughters, Mrs Bernice (Charles) Burk of Scranton; Margaret Elizabeth (William) Harvey of Harveyville, Kansas; and Mary Alice (John) Harris of Iowa. Thirty-three grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mary Berry of Washington, survive. Everyone knew her as Grandma Black. She was buried in Scranton City Cemetery.
