But alas, the old man met a tragic death. For as he was going up to the house from the mill, a man named Bennett who had a spite against him for some little cause, followed up behind him with a large black snake whip such as farmers used in those days, and hit him lightly on the legs with the lash. Grandfather turned around, told Bennett to stop or he would shake him, and went along and paid no more attention to him. Then Bennett turned the whip which was loaded with a heavy leaden ball in the butt end and gave him a blow over the head knocking him senseless. He lived but a day or two. He came to his mind long enough to tell what he said to Bennett and that was about all he said. This Bennett was the first man to be hung by the State of New York.

Benjamin Bennett, 32 was executed July 21, 1820 in Ballston Spa, Saratoga County, New York, convicted of the murder of Seth Haskins on September 4, 1819 in Corinth, Saratoga County, New York. Both Bennett and Haskins were buried in an old cemetery at Jessup’s Landing, which now is Corinth.

The Corinth Rural Cemetery, in the Village of Corinth, is where burials were re -interred from the old Jessups Landing Cemetery on Main Street.
