BARBARA MITCHELL BASS, of Alvin, Texas passed away Monday, December 3, 2018 at the age of 83. She was predeceased by her parents, Sidney and Willie Mitchell, and infant son Michael Andrew Bass. Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Harrel Andrew Bass of Alvin, Texas; her children and their spouses, Jeanie Bass Upshaw (Michael) of Alvin, Texas, Randy Bass (Lisa) of The Woodlands, Texas, and Yvonne Bass Ramsey (Robert) of Richmond, Texas; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a large extended family.

Barbara was born September 1, 1935, in Barbers Hill, Texas to Sidney Daniel and Willie Claretta (Beasley) Mitchell. As a young child, she moved with her family to Manvel, Texas where she attended school starting in 1941, from first through the eighth grade, followed by attendance at Alvin High School. It was at Alvin High School that she met her future husband, who was the love of her life.

Harrel and Barbara were married in Manvel, Texas on her birthday in 1952. Harrel promised her dad to always take care of her and he certainly has been a man of his word. On September 1, 2018, they celebrated their 66th anniversary.

In the early years of their marriage, Harrel and Barbara made their home in both Texas and Louisiana, until finally settling back in Alvin, Texas. While her children were younger, Barbara stayed home caring for her family, but when they were school-age she was encouraged by her husband to pursue her desire to attend college and enter a career in education. She attended Wharton County Junior College and graduated with honors in May 1963. She then attended the University of Houston, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Education on June 4, 1965. She completed a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Administration in August, 1970. Post-Master’s studies were pursued in later years and she completed all but the dissertation for her PhD.

Barbara’s teaching career as a language arts teacher began in September, 1965, in Alvin ISD. In 1971, she began her career in school administration as Administrative Assistant in the central office in Alvin ISD. This position was followed the next year by a newly created position as Coordinator of Elementary Education and lead her to complete the requirements for her Administrative Certificate from the University of Houston. In June, 1978, she became Assistant Superintendent at Sweeney ISD and relocated to Sweeney, Texas. She was there until she retired in May, 1991, and then moved back to Alvin. Her career as an administrator began at a time when few women were in school administration and she was considered a leader in opening doors for other women to begin administrative careers.

During retirement Barbara developed an interest in genealogical research and spent time taking trips to research her family. Barbara and Harrel loved to travel to Medicine Park, Oklahoma, which was a frequent destination for them after they bought a cottage there.

Barbara was a devout Christian and a member of South Park Church. She was a loving and giving person who was always there for anyone in need, whether it be cooking meals or taking someone to a doctor’s appointment. Because of her humility, many of her actions for others received no notice, but her family knew that she was someone who could be depended on for unconditional love and guidance.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to South Park Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are being made through Scott Funeral Home in Alvin, Texas. On Saturday, December 8, visitation will be from 10:30-11:30 am. The service will begin at 11:30 am, followed by a graveside service. (281) 585-1000 www.scottfuneralhome.net
