Joseph Jay Scott, age 68, passed away on November 16, 2018 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines following a short battle with cancer. Known to many as Joe and to family and friends as Jay, he never met a stranger. His kind heart and quick wit always led to friendly conversations with those he met.

Jay was born May 15, 1950 in Fort Dodge to Joseph A. Scott and Lorraine (Gelner) Scott. On June 7, 1969 he married Sonja Mernka in Otho. They were blessed with one daughter, Emily. He resided in Fort Dodge until moving to Norwalk in 2016.

Jay was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving as a specially trained sniper. He was currently enjoying retirement and was previously employed at Pella Windows and Pizza Hut. He enjoyed collecting marbles, hunting mushrooms, fishing and playing pool. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family.

Jay is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sonja, daughter Emily (Jonathan) Jones of Norwalk, grandson Ryan Joseph, and siblings David of North Carolina, Gloria (Dan) VanArsdale of Richland, Washington, Vickey (Scott) Groat of Fort Dodge, Jerry (Marilyn) of Altoona and Roy (Ruth) of Elgin, Illinois. He was preceded in death by parents Joseph A. and Lorraine Scott.

He so loved and appreciated his devoted wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandson. Per Jay’s wishes, no funeral services are planned.
