Charles was the son of Johann Georg Henry Kuhl and Maria Forell Kuhl. Both of his parents were born in Germany. His place of death was listed as Watogan, Ill. He first married Theresa Hillenbrand (Aug. 1854 WI-Mar. 23, 1922 Wenona, Ill) about 1889. After Theresa's death he married Catherine Langmack on Sept. 8, 1924 in Kane County, Ill. Catherine was the daughter of John Langmack and Susan Lynch. He had two brothers who have not been found. They were Jacob Wilhelm "Willie" born Apr. 9, 1860-Nov. 16, 1910 CO, and John Henry "Harry" born Apr. 11, 1871-Feb. 24, 1951 Elgin, Ill. William married Minnie Clark on Oct. 23, 1884 in LaSalle, Ill. He was a butcher in the town of Metamora in 1890. Charles was a butcher by trade as well.

Theresa and Charles had 8 children with three living by 1900. Their children were Charlie b. Aug. 1882, Edward b. Aug. 1885, and William b. Feb. 1895. All were born in Ill.

By the time the 1880 census was taken both of his parents were deceased and Lilly, Harry and Charles Kuhl were living with their married sister Mary Ellen Kuhl Anicker.
