He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Clara Ruth (Sheppard) Akins, Daughter Phyllis J. James, Son James "Billy" W. Akins III, Son Jerome W. (wife Clara) Akins, Daughter Pamela J. Akins, Grandson James W. Akins IV and many other family members and close friends.
James was born February 23, 1929 and raised in Nashville, TN, the son of James and Maragette Akins. While he was in the military he was stationed in many parts of the country and he was also a long time resident of Colorado Springs.
In his early life he was a tailor in his father's tailor shop. At the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Army. He met his lovely wife Clara in Washington D.C. and they were married June 13, 1956. While being a husband, father, and Army Officer, he worked diligently on his Bachelor's Degree, graduating from the University of Southern Colorado-Pueblo.
He retired from the Army in 1978 after 32 years of honorable service as a decorated Chief Warrant Officer (CWO2). He began working for the Colorado Department of Corrections in 1980 as a Correctional Officer. He completed his Master's Degree and became an Executive Leader in The Offender Services Department. He retired from the State of Colorado in 1997.
James took pride in taking care of his family and spent as much time as he could with his wife and children. He will be tremendously missed.
