Officer David Poling drowned in the Ohio River while chasing a suspect who had fled from a traffic stop initiated by the Gallipolis Police Department.

David A. Poling, 32, of Crown City, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 in a line of duty accident in Gallipolis. He was born on March 13, 1975 in Grafton, West Virginia, son of David Poling and Vivian K. Nye Davis. David was married to Michelle Ours on June 3, 1995.

David was a probation officer for Gallipolis Municipal Court, a Gallia County Sheriff's Deputy, and the Town Marshall for Crown City. He was a Sgt. in the United States Marine Corps, serving as an MP. He attended Guyan Valley Missionary Baptist Church, was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Captain of the District 2 Fire Dept., formerly with the Gallipolis Police Dept., a Hannan Trace Rinky Dink Basketball coach, a Hannan Trace Softball Girls B Ball coach, and a former member of the United States Police Canine Association. He was an avid hunter and Steelers fan.
