MUSIKANT

David Bruce, 37, of Bogota, NJ passed September 13, 2004 after seven years of courageously battling brain tumors. He was challenged with becoming legally blind at the start of his illness and never once complained. To the contrary he called his challenge a "Gift". His courage, positivity, determination, strength, and love of life will always be an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. So often after tragedy, comes something positive. That's what happened to Dave - whose tumor and impaired eyesight gave him a new outlook on life and an appreciation of the need to help others.

Dave was born March 2, 1967, the beloved third child of Barbara (nee Strassman) and the late Robert Musikant (deceased 4/79). His sister, Amy Becerra, of Bogota, whom he adored and admired, and his brother Martin and his wife, Jeanna, of Cranford, survive him. His little niece, Madison Becerra, and he were buddies: his other niece Rachel Keenen, held a special place in his heart: and nephew Richard Keenen couldn't have been more devoted to Dave who became his mentor in high school sports including wrestling and football.

Family parties were a time for him to enjoy his poppy, Harold Strassman, 93, of Manalapan, his great aunt also 93, Evelyn Madison of Passaic, and also his aunts, uncles, cousins, and five new nephews. Not to be left out, other survivors include hundreds of loving caring "brothers" from Phi Gamma Delta, Rutgers, and his many Bogotian friends and associates.

With Marty by his side rooting for him, he became a leader in all he did, president of student congress, Captain of the football team, President of his fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, to name a few. After graduating Rutgers, 1989, he worked in the insurance industry, lastly at Guardian, New York as a regional training consultant. They loaned him out as a motivational speaker and fundraiser, after his illness began, to the United Way of New York. He spoke on Local cable TV, became a mentor to many blind people and at Camp Marsala he taught children who were blind or partially sighted.

No friendship was ever lost, he kept in touch with people because he truly cared about them and they responded positively to him. He was the most positive thinker and doer anyone could ever meet. In '97-'98, he was the recipient of the prestigious Coulter Award, which is awarded to the graduate brother who has contributed the most to an undergrad chapter through service other than an officer.

A service to honor "his Inspirational Life" will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 PM at Gutterman-Musicant, Hackensack. Interment will follow at Passaic Junction Cemetery, Saddle Brook. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to any of his favorites: Bogota Voulnteer Ambulance Corps, Larch Ave, Bogota, NJ 07603 or The Institute for Children with Cancer & Blood Disorders: Building of Hope: 121 Somerset St., New Brunswick, NJ 08901.
