She was born in New York City, but grew up the only child of Harold and Marjorie Browne. She met Merrell E. Kelly in December 1944 while she was attending Connecticut College and he was training at the Naval Submarine School. Five weeks later they were married in San Diego California. When they retired, after traveling all over the world with the Navy, they move, to Bellingham Washington. They were married for 65 years until Merrill died in 2010. They had four children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
