Jesse Bier, 88, of Seabrook, N.H. and formerly of Haverhill died Friday at York Hospital in York,
Born in Lawrence, he was an assembler at Western Electric for several years.
During World War II, Mr. Bier served in the Army. He was a defender of the Corregidor, and became
a Prisoner of War for 2 years before escaping when the vessel the Shinyo Maru was sunk by
Allied forces. He was one of 82 survivors out of 750 P.O.W.'s on board. He received the Bronze
Star, Purple Heart, and P.O.W. Medal.
He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, Disabled American Veterans and American Ex-Prisoners
The widower of Glenna Mae (Sandler) Bier, he leaves son and daughter-in-law Edward and Linda of
Pennsylvania; and two granddaughters.
Burial was in Children of Israel Cemetery.
Arrangements were by H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home.
