Pastor Shelton was called to preach in 1988, and he was ordained as a minister in the Church of the Brethren on August 15, 1999. Through the years he faithfully served as interim pastor and pastor at many churches in Virginia, one church in North Carolina, and one church in West Virginia. He retired on July 30, 2018 as pastor of the Boones Mill Church of the Brethren in Boones Mill, Va.

Prior to becoming a pastor, he honorably served four years in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. He and his wife owned and operated Shelton and Kilby Grocery in Bassett, Va. for about 14 years. He also worked at the Bassett Post Office as a mail carrier for two years, and he drove a school bus for Henry County Public Schools for one year.
