One of 9 children born to Charles LeRoy & Nellie Nancy (Hibbard) Oakes.
John married Mina Jane Chapman in 1945 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. John owned a Coca-Cola plant in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and also in Parsons, Kansas. He was elected to the Kansas State Legislature as a representative.

"OPAERATION TIDAL WAVE" - Low level mission to destroy Rumanian Oil Fields, August 1, 1943. The 389th BG loses six aircraft in one of the most daring raids of WWII. Coming in at tree top level the Sky Scorpions destroy the Steaua Romana oil refinery. The refinery does not produce oil for six months. 389th earns Presidential Unit Citation, all of the crews receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. Lt. Smith & crew return successfully to Benghazi.
