Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Entered the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Regiment, Grays Reserves of the Pennsylvania Militia. He was then appointed as an officer in the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, eventually rising to Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the regiment. He lost his right leg due to wounds received in action at the Battle of Dabney's Mill, Virginia (February 6, 1865). He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious conduct in the battle of Hatcher's Run, Va.".
