Along with brother Samuel Stanwood, he was one of the incorporators of the 1st Baptist Society of Brunswick. He lived on and owned 100 acres of town land which abutted his father's property. According to Ethel S. Bolton, he was described by one of his grandsons as a "genial, pleasant old gentleman."
Other children from 1st marriage are: David (b. June 1787), Margaret (b. Aug. 1789), Philip (b. Sept. 1805) and Isaac (b. May 1897). Daughter Eleanor is from his 2nd marriage.
