Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Frances J. (Smith) Book. He is survived by four children, Charles W. Jr., husband of Helen (Weaver) Book; Susan Byorick; Donna, wife of Mike Erdman; and Kathleen, wife of Michael Daminger; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a fourth due in January; and sisters Nancy O'Neill and Linda Brown. Twin sons James and John, died at birth. All of his surviving family lives in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
Bud, or Charlie as he was also called, was a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, where he was active with Senior Shepherds. The fellowship of friends there helped him through the grief of losing his dear wife. He retired from the Lancaster City Bureau of Fire as a Deputy Chief in 1989 after 35 years of service. His father also was a firefighter, as is a son-in-law. He served for three years in the United States Air Force followed by three years in the Air Force Reserves during the Korean War.
Charlie was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and most particularly telling tall tales about the adventures he had while in the wild. He relished nothing more than taking his grandsons on the hunt, although it was his granddaughter who ultimately got the largest deer. He was also well known as a jokester, and always collected new jokes to tell family and friends, and he continued this until his last day. His was a larger-than-life personality and its loss will be felt keenly by all of us.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, November 30, 2018 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, PA 17601, with the Funeral Service to follow at 11 a.m. Interment in Conestoga Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Charlie's memory to Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd at the above address or to Food For The Poor, 6401 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek, FL, 33073.
