Raymond worked as an autobody mechanic in many body shops in the area. He was a member of Oakwood Memorial Baptist Church, and enjoyed working on old cars and being around family and friends.
Raymond was predeceased by his parents, Grace Ballam Matthews and Arthur Raymond Matthews; and sisters, Ann M. Taylor (Ben), and Barbara T. Allen.
He is survived by his wife of 9 years, Billie J. Matthews; sons, James W. Sowards (Mary), Adrian Partain (Patsy), and daughter, Deana Maple (Robi); grandsons, Raymond J. Sowards (Heather), and Randell Phillips; great-grandchildren, J. Austin Sowards and Halie M. Sowards; and three nieces.
