Brigadier-General Rudolf George Jelf D.S.O., C.M.G. was born in Aldershot on the 19th of August 1873 the eldest son of Richard Henry Jelf and his wife Margaret (nee Blunt). He was baptised on the 18th of September 1873 when his father was a Colonel serving as Adjutant attached to the Royal Engineer Train.

Rudolf attended Eton College and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He was gazetted into the King’s Royal Rifles on the 4th of October 1893, became Lieutenant in 1894, Captain in 1898 and Major in 1904. He served in South Africa from 1899 to 1901.

In 1907 he was appointed Aide-de-Camp to the Viceroy of India, a position he held until 1911.

In WW1 he served on the Western Front with the 2nd Battalion the King’s Royal Rifles. He was mentioned five times in despatches. He was awarded his D.S.O.in 1915.

In 1919 he was awarded his C.M.G. and was appointed Brigadier-General. He married Kathleen Alicia Elaine Geen at St Margaret’s in Westminster on the 6th of September 1919.

They moved to Camberley where he enjoyed golf, fishing and became involved with the running of the Frimley and Camberley Cadet Corps.

Rudolf died at his home The Rough in Chobham Road in Camberley on the 22nd of October 1958. His ashes were buried at St Peter’s on the 24th of October 1958.
