Samuel Uttley was born December 23, 1837 in Wheatacre, Norfolk, England the fifth of ten children that William Uttley had in his second marriage with Ann Girling.

The lure of adventure and making a new life in the new world took his older brother Jonathan to Canada in about 1854 where their uncle George Girling had settled in the 1830s. On May 20, 1856, Samuel, his older brother Nathan and their cousin Matilda Girling who would marry brother Jonathan in Canada arrived in New York on the ship Amazon on their way to Elmira. There they settled, no doubt with advice from brother Jonathan and help from Uncle George.

Brothers Jonathan and Nathan married in 1857 and five years later, on December 5, 1862 Samuel married Mary Baxter Taylor. The couple were to have seven children.

Samuel's wife passed on in 1915 and Samuel was to follow on September 5, 1921. He was buried in an unmarked grave in the "Girling Cemetery" which was a half acre of land that had been separated from George Girling's farm in 1863 to be known as the "Elmira Union Burying Ground". In 1952 that space became part of the St James Lutheran Cemetery in Elmira.
