Joel McNutt enlisted on 1 Nov 1862 into the 18th Regiment Pennsylvania Cavalry and was later (14 Jul 1865) transferred to the 3rd Regiment Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry.
According to his military service record, Joel McNutt was taken prisoner, place/date unknown, and was paroled 2 Feb 1863. He was sent to the defenses of Washington on 16 May 1863.
He mustered out on 31 Oct 1865, Cumberland, MD.
