TALLEY, Robert L. III, age 76, formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away on November 15, 2018. A graduate of the Drewry-Mason High School, Class of 1960 in Martinsville, Va., Robert received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1964 and a Master of Business Administration from the College of William & Mary in 1968. Robert worked as an engineer on nuclear submarines for Newport News Shipbuilding after graduating from Virginia Tech. Following business school, he spent several years in the corporate sector before founding his own financial advising company. Robert supported the Rotary Club of Richmond as an active member with perfect attendance for nearly a half century, and received the Claude Woodward Award in 2016 for his dedication to the club's growth and development. He treasured the friendships and professional camaraderie provided by the club, and deeply valued the information and insights shared during weekly meetings. He was also heartened by Rotary International's efforts to eradicate polio globally. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Robert's adoration of his beloved family, the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Rotary Club was matched only by his affinity for music. With an impressive collection of hundreds of 45s from the 1950s, those who knew and loved Robert will always remember his smile as he sang along to old favorites by Elvis Presley, John Denver, the Statler Brothers and Johnny Cash. Robert's kindness, gentle nature, sense of humor, creativity, optimism and enthusiasm for life inspired his colleagues, friends and family. Even during challenging times, he always maintained his hope for the future and his thoughtful perspective. His warmth, radiant smile and laugh brightened each day, and his fondness for chocolate nut fudge was second to none. With an adventurous spirit, Robert cherished travels with family to Canada, Europe, Bermuda, the American west, the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia and of course the North Carolina shore. Preceded in death by his mother, Lois Johnson Talley; and father, Robert L. Talley Jr.; Robert is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Katherine "Kitty" Talley; daughters, Jennifer Foley, Amy Garrett and Emily Talley; sons-in-law, Roy Foley, Steven Garrett and Benjamin Grosz; and grandchildren, Megan, Kelly, Tyler and Robert Emery. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Simeon, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 25, followed by burial at the Monticello Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville. Donations in Robert's memory may be made to the Rotary Club of Richmond Foundation, P.O. Box 17446, Richmond, Va. 23226. The foundation requests that donations made by check include "In Memory of Robert Talley" on the memo line.
