Born July 4, 1929 in Heards, VA, she was the daughter of the late James Hebron Kirtley and Mary Louise Dudley Kirtley. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Craig Baber; a son, Wayne Shelby Craig; a sister, Ellen Glass; and three brothers, John Kirtley, James Kirtley, and Kenneth Kirtley.
Rachel was a graduate of Greenwood High School and a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church.
Surviving her are her husband, Jacob Shelby Craig of Afton; two daughters, Mary Craig Thacker of Waynesboro and Ruth Craig Kirby and her husband, Tony, of Louisa; a son, Jacob Hebron Craig and his wife, Theresa, of Waynesboro; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Bertie Payne of Buena Vista, Frances Campbell of Charlottesville, and Margie Walker of Ohio; and a special sister-in-law, Hattie R. Craig.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 24, 2007 in the Holy Cross Episcopal Cemetery in Batesville with the Rev. Anthony Andres officiating. There is no formal visitation.
The family expresses special thanks to the staff of Hospice of the Piedmont for their help and support.
