He was employed as a chauffeur, auto mechanic, and as a hotel manager with his wife, Dorothy. It was while managing the hotel that my uncle was struck in the head during an attempted robbery and deprived of his sight. I never knew him when he was sighted.
He was married to Dorothy Olivia Williams for over 40 years. She preceded him in death in 1983.
Hervey was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church in Kansas City, MO. He loved to get dressed up in his best clothes and go to church. He was always well dressed in a good suit, Florsheims, and a hat, preferably a Stetson.
He was a veteran of WWI and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tacitus E. Gaillard Post.
On 23 April 1991, he was brought to Los Angeles by his last surviving sibling, Bessie Williams Turner, who cared for him until his death.
He departed this life on 3 August 1991 at Martin Luther King Hospital, his sister at his side. He didn't seem to be in pain, just stopped talking in mid-sentence and was gone.
His remains were shipped to Watkins Brothers Memorial Chapel, with burial in Leavenworth National Cemetery.
