Jason moved to Hawley, Minnesota, in 1999 and was a 2002 graduate of Hawley High School. While in school he portrayed the school mascot and earned the nickname "Tuba" after the band instrument he played. He enlisted in the United States Army after graduation and was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana as a Cavalry Scout assigned to Apache Troop, 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Infantry Division. He was currently on his second tour in Iraq. Jason enjoyed sailing, building boats, cross country running, and writing historical fiction. Although small in stature, he was big at heart, known as a selfless leader, always putting his fellow soldier's needs before his own. Jason is survived by his wife of two years, Laura Schumann; one son, Joe Schumann; father, Jim (Sherry) Schumann; mother, Candie (Russell Toth); two brothers, James and Ben; step-brother, Brent; two step-sisters, Kayla and Kristie; grandparents, Gary (Barb) Schumann; and step-grandparents, Bud (Shirley) Beckett. Jason's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf clusters, two Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Humanitarian Service Medal.

Jason's memorial is maintained by his mother.
