GRAND JURY IS MAKING PROBE MURDER HERE
Death of John Allen Sunday Night under Investigation

At 1:30 this afternoon, the Monroe County grand jury was convened to investigate the murder of John Allen who formerly worked in the furnace room of the jail and who died from a blow over his right forehead that was inflicted Sunday night. Charles Houston and Roy Adams, who are said to have visited the home of Allen at 708 West Eleventh Street are being held by the police while an investigation is being made.

Houston denies that he was at the Allen house, but Adams says he was and that he was with him. According to a signed confession of Adams, he and Houston went to the home Sunday evening, after both had been drinking, in search for more while mule. In an argument over the granddaughter of Allen, it is stated by Adams, according to the police, that Houston struck Allen a blow. The instrument used has not been determined. Three doctors waited on Allen and after his death an autopsy revealed a fractured skull, it was learned. Officers Rayle and Isom arrested Adams, and Curry and Ison (sic) picked up Houston. Both men are employees of the Showers factory. Houston lives on West Sixth Street and Adams at First and Morton streets.

Funeral services for Allen will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Ramp Creek Church in charge of Rev. George Miller of Smithville. Short services will be held at 12:30 PM from the home, 708 West Eleventh Street.

Pallbearers will be Arthur, John, Peter and Ralph Deckard, Roy Lucas and Carl Jacobs. Interment will be in the Lucas Cemetery.

Allen is survived by the widow, Elmira Allen, three sons, Charles, William and Elmer Allen, three daughters, Mrs. Homer Hazel, Mrs. Pearl Chandler and Mrs. Goldie Gill, all of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah E. Powell of Spencer.
