June Vergil "James" Mefford later served as a Flight Officer and Pilot with the 15th Army Air Force, 460th Bomb Group, 763rd Bomb Squad, Spinazzola, Italy. June later changed his name to "James".

James Virgil Mefford was born June Virgil Mefford & changed his name. He was a B-24 pilot, 15th Army Air Force, 460th Bomb Group, 763rd Bomb Squad, Spinazzola, Italy. He was shot down, made an emergency landing at Vis, and later returned to duty.

June V. Mefford and Eleanor Miller married February 5, 1942. June changed his name to "James". "James" is shown on his wedding license and certificate along with a note about the name change.
