Mr. Josiah (Joe) Walter Bagwell, Jr. age, 79, of Nebo, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Autumn Care of Marion following several years of declining health.

Joe was born in Concord, NC on May 9, 1939 to the late Walter Bagwell, Sr. and Margaret McIntosh Bagwell.

Upon graduation from Greenville (SC) High School, he attended Clemson University and graduated in 1961 with a degree in Industrial Management. While at Clemson, he was the head cheerleader and became a distinguished member of the Block C Letterman’s Club. After graduation, Joe enrolled in Officer Candidate School for the US Navy. He served faithfully for several years including time on the USS Randolph aircraft carrier during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

After the Navy, he worked for Burlington Industries at the Clinchfield plant in East Marion. He later went to work for Etta Packaging (now known as West Rock) and retired as the lead Sales Manager after more than 30 years. In his life, he was an active member of the United Methodist Church, Marion Civitan Club, and Marion Lake Club. Known as “Poppo” to his grandchildren, he loved to travel with his family to Garden City Beach, SC to surf fish and eat doughnuts. His devotion and love for his family was the most important thing in his life. He was an avid golfer, having scored holes-in-one at Mt. Mitchell and Marion Lake Club. He was also a 30-year Clemson football season ticket holder, having attended hundreds of games through the years. His “retirement home” on Lake James gave him a beautiful view of the lake. He loved looking at the view every day and night.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 30 years, Dorothy “Dot” Burch Bagwell. He was also preceded in death by a half-brother, Dr. Lloyd Vann Seawell.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Gloria Cagle Bagwell; children, Josiah “Walt” Bagwell and wife Tabitha Foster Bagwell of Marion and their two children, Brooklyn and Josh, Dorothy “Dee Dee” Bagwell Heberling of Rochester Hills, MI and her children Luke, Jakob and Meredith, Andy Bagwell and wife Stephanie Jackson Bagwell of Cary, NC and their children Abigail and Stewart, Cathy Bagwell Marsh and husband Kris of Staunton, VA and their children Will and Louie, Jennifer Ward and husband Bobby of Peachtree City, GA and their children Kaleigh and Alden, and Scott Moses and wife Rajni of Burnsville, NC and their daughter Rajni Ann.

A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 2:00pm at First United Methodist Church of Marion with Rev. Warren Owens officiating.
