Richard H. Barber, age 87, of Linden, Iowa and formerly of Marathon and Schaller, Iowa, died on Friday, May 18, 2007 at his home in Linden.
Richard Harold Barber was born on Sept. 6, 1919, to Harold and Ruth (Jeffries) Barber in Spencer, Iowa. He lived with his family in Spencer where he attended grade school and later graduated from Spencer High School in 1937.
During World War II, Richard served his country in the United State Army, during which time he was stationed in England.
On March 30, 1941, Richard was united in marriage to Ethel L. Larson. This union was blessed with two children: Mary and Rick.
Richard spent most of his life in the Marathon area. He lived the last six years in an apartment in Linden. During this time, he enjoyed his hobbies: watching NASCAR races, identifying the many bird species that visited his feeders and observing the mischievous little squirrels that lived in the trees near his home. Richard was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W.
Grandpa, as he was known, always looked forward to visits from family and friends. He loved his grandsons and their wives and all of his great-grandchildren, and his many nieces and nephews. He so enjoyed Christmas time when Larry and Sandy and Jerri, along with Mary and Lyle and Rick and Joan would make his holiday very special by celebrating with him in his home.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Mary J. Archer and her husband Lyle MN; his son, Richard L. Barber and his wife Joan (Stoner); four grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; his constant companion, little dog, Molly; as well as many family and friends and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Richard in death were his parents, Harold and Ruth; his wife, Ethel, the love of his life, in 2001; two brothers, Bob and Archie; and one sister, Irene Firebaugh.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 22, 2007 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow at the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
