Daniel S. McCallum was the son of James A. McCallum and his first wife Catherine Smith McCallum. He was killed on January 15, 1865 when Fort Fisher fell to the Union Army. He and his brother William H. McCallum were members of Company E also known as the "Scotch Greys" of the 40th North Carolina State Troop (aka 3rd NC Artillery). It is unknown what happened to his body. His brother William survived along with two of their first cousins Doddridge McCallum and Doddridge's brother Neill McCallum. The three of them were taken prisoner to Point Lookout, MD where they all later gave their Oath of Allegiance to the US Gov't and were paroled later in 1865.
