Civil War Union Army Officer. He was among the 186 killed in the Battle of North Anna River serving as a Captain of Company H in the 26th Michigan Infantry for the Union Army in the Civil War. Of this tragic event, Major Lucius H Ives of the 26th Michigan Infantry later wrote: "In reply to a word of caution suggested to him by a friend that he might occupy a position of less exposure, he said, in effect 'It matters little where I stand [just] so it be in the line of duty'. With these brave words upon his lips, a random shot did its cruel work and he fell [shot through the head] - dead". He was the son of Amos E Steele, Sr., and Rozana Cranson, and the brother of Amos E. Steele, Jr., who was a Lt. Col. also killed during combat in the Civil War. The Steele Bros. GAR Post in Mason, Michigan, was named in their honor.
