Edward J. Alexander, 98, of Bradford, died on August 29 at High Pointe House in Haverhill after a brief illness.
He was born in Somerville on November 1, 1919, son of the late William and Florence (Jones) Alexander. Ed graduated Somerville High School in 1937. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1941-1945.
Edward was a firefighter for the Somerville Fire Department for 35 years, retiring in 1978. Upon leaving the Fire Department, he worked as a salesman for Highland Auto Parts in Somerville. He retired from Highland in 2007 at 87 years old.
He was lifetime member of the Wakefield Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1276 and the Somerville Masonic Lodge.
Edward loved traveling with his late wife Louise, whom he married in 1942. They went to Aruba, Spain, Cuba and numerous other places, with cruises being a favorite vacation activity. The couple split their time between Florida, where they would golf as much as possible, and Massachusetts until Louise’s death in 2006.
He continued to golf and remain active throughout his 80s and 90s. Ed was talented candlepin bowler, often placing in the senior league at Bradford’s Academy Lanes. He attributed his long, happy life to keeping busy, laughing constantly, watching the Red Sox (who finally won a World Series right before his 85th birthday), daily walks, and a nightly dram of scotch.
Edward is survived by his loving daughter, Carol (Alexander) Muse. “Pa” will be sorely missed by his grandchildren, Heather Muse and husband Mike Burmeister of Brooklyn, NY, Sean Alexander and wife Kerri-Ann of Saugus, Kenneth Alexander and wife Natalie of Columbus, OH, great-grandchildren Felicia and Cole Alexander of Saugus and Lyla Alexander of Columbus, OH, as well as many other loving family members and friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Louise (Martin) Alexander, and son Kenneth Alexander.
