A lifetime resident of Goldsboro, Hamp, as he was affectionately known, was educated in the Goldsboro Public School system. He left school in 1950 to enlist in the Navy and served as a seaman during the Korean War. He spent four years in the military and upon his discharge, returned to school, graduating from Dillard High School in 1956.
Hamp was employed at Cherry Hospital as a Psychiatric Attendant Technician for 29 years. He retired in 1992 and was able to devote more time to his hobbies of lawnmower and home repair, and fishing. He was an avid reader of the Bible, African history, and the News Argus. When at home, you could always find him reading or working in his workshop. He willingly shared his knowledge and often held conversations with friends and family to bring them up to date on current events at home and abroad. He had the ability to make everyone feel welcome and important. He always had a hug, smile, or handshake when he greeted you as he welcomed you into his presence.
My favorite memory of my dad, whom I met when I was an adult, was his preparing a fish fry for me when I visited him and Carriemom in Goldsboro. It is from him that I inherited my love of extra sharp cheddar cheese!
