Cecil Aaron Barnes Jr.
May 26, 1934 - March 28, 2017

Salem - Cecil Aaron Barnes Jr., 82, of Salem, passed away on March 27, 2017 after a long battle with diabetes, which led to kidney and liver failure. Cecil was a lifelong resident of Middle Grove community, having always lived within 1 ½ miles of the school. He graduated from North Salem High School in 1953. Through the years, Cecil was active in the community; he had served in as chairman of the Middle Grove parents club, was a Boy Scout leader, a master gardener and a member of the Salem Area Garden Club. Cecil was a kind, caring and loving man who enjoyed woodworking, gardening and fishing. Just last year he celebrated his 39th year of camping at Lava Lake with his children and grandchildren.

His employment through life included Meadow Grove Dairy, Salem Ice Works, Able Appliance Repair (his own business) and working as an electrician at the State School for the Deaf and Stayton Canning. He finally retired as supervising electrician at Salem Hospital. Cecil was not only a hard worker; he was also a very proud military retiree. He served in the Army, and after 22 years retired as a Chief Petty Officer (E-8) in the US Navy Seabees.

Cecil was happiest when he was with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Gustin-Barnes; daughters, Brenda Vawser, son Dennis Barnes, daughter, Diane Frankenhauser; brother Donald Barnes and four grandchildren. Cecil is preceded in death by his mother, Irene Toelle; father, Cecil A Barnes Sr.; his sister Delores Doran; first wife Janet Toelle-Barnes, second wife Rose Rittenhouse-Barnes and grandson Alex Barnes.

Viewing will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Howell Edwards Deorksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors at 11am. Funeral service will follow at 1pm. Graveside service will be held at 3 pm on April 3, with military honors.
