AUDREY ARLENE HARTLEBEN
March 4, 1928 ˜ October 7, 2018

Audrey Arlene Hartleben died peacefully on October 7, 2018 in her home in Eugene, Oregon following a brief illness. She was born to Opal Genevieve (Wilson) and Lloyd Purl Sheldon on March 4, 1928 in Minatare, Nebraska, the sixth of nine children. In 1935 the family moved to Salem, Oregon.

Audrey met and fell in love with Eric Lee Carlson while attending Oregon State College. They married in Salem, Oregon on December 18, 1948 and their union produced six children. Audrey stayed home to raise their children and managed to complete her degree in Education at the same time.

Audrey loved children. She directed a program of religious education for teens at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. After raising six children of her own she taught first grade at Hoover Elementary School for 21 years.
Following retirement, she volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate to assure neglected/abused children were provided safe, loving homes through the juvenile court system.

Audrey and Eric divorced in 1979. She found love again with Randall Larry Hartleben. They married September 25, 1981. They enjoyed traveling together and spending time with family and friends. Randy died Aug. 9, 1996. Audrey moved to live near family in Vancouver, Washington where she became active in her local Catholic church. There she met her last love, Preston Blair Kidwell. They married August 24, 2002, hoping to have at least five good years together. They were blessed with ten years. Preston died November 19, 2012.

Audrey moved to Snoqualmie, Washington to be near several great-grandchildren, then to Cascade Manor in Eugene, Oregon to be near family living there.

Audrey had an outgoing personality and a wicked sense of humor. She quickly made friends at “the Manor.” She advocated for improvements there, started a book club and volunteered making teddy bears for children involved in traumatic events.

Audrey is survived by her children: Cynthia Carlson (William Young), Janet Moore, Marcella (David) Rush, Philip (Toni) Carlson, Charlotte (Eric) Woodward and Steven (Roberta) Carlson; grandchildren: David and Marieke (Michael) Young, Conrad Moore, Stephen (Rebecca) and Michael Rush, Carissa (Dan) Roe, Christopher and Britt-Marie Carlson, Thomas Woodward, Alexander and Aaron Carlson, Amanda Mackey; and great-grandchildren: Lovely Young-Page, Danica Rush, Matthew and Katelyn Roe.

A funeral mass was held Friday, November 16, 2018 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 1010 Columbia St. S.E., Salem, Oregon. Inurnment was at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem, Oregon.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Sacred Heart and caregivers Misti, McKenzie, Rebecca, Elena and Christina for their loving care of Audrey in her final days.
