Mr. Jerry Wayne York, of Tallapoosa, GA, passed away on his birthday, November 10, 2018. A United States Marine Corps veteran, he was born on the 171st birthday of the Corps, and he died on the 243rd birthday of the Corps, as well as his own 72nd birthday. Semper fidelis!

He was born November 10, 1946, in Villa Rica, GA, to the late Lawrence and Lavada Liner York.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Dove.

Jerry was best known for his outlandish, but witty sayings, as well as his country boy charm. Though he appeared tough on the outside, he had a soft spot for animals, as well as children. He is also survived by his loving fur companion, Gunny (because he wouldn’t be outranked by his dog!). He was a lifelong public servant, who was always willing to give someone the shirt off of his back or the shoes off his feet – but never wanting anything in return. Jerry is loved and missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

Portage PD 70 is 10-42. Semper Fi!

He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer York, Wendy York, and Cindy York, all of Portage, IN.

A memorial service will be held, Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 PM until the service begins.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Jerry’s memory to The Gary Sinise Foundation, PAWS for Purple Hearts, or the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

Miller Funeral Home (Tallapoosa, GA) is in charge of the arrangements.
