Veteran of The War of 1812 as were his two older brothers.

Samuel Winter was the third son and fifth child of Christopher Winter (1752-1823) originally of Berks County, Pennsylvania, a Veteran of the Revolutionary War, and a lead member of the Dutch Forks Settlement in Donegal Township, Washington County, in Western Pennsylvania. Samuel was born at the Dutch Forks Settlement. Samuel's wife Catherine Revenaugh came from another nearby Dutch Forks Settlement family whose progenitor was Casper Revenaugh (1730-1803), an immigrant from Alsace-Lorraine, France.

Samuel and wife Catherine Revenaugh moved multiple times, leaving Donegal Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania and moving, in the 1830's, to Hancock County, Virginia as well as Maryland in between. They ended up lastly in Bedford/Fulton Counties by the 1840's and are shown in the 1850 census living in East Providence Township, Bedford County, PA. After his death his widow Catherine went to live with their eldest daughter, Delilah (Winter) Bernhard, whose husband was the first Sheriff of Fulton County, Pennsylvania when that county was formed in 1850. Catherine Winter can be found on the 1860 census living with daughter Delilah and her husband Jacob Bernhard in Bethel Township, Fulton County, Pennsylvania.

Samuel and wife Catherine had 8 known children to reach adulthood, almost all daughters. All 8 children currently have memorials and are attached to this page.
