Michael J. Mankin, age 73 of Cheboygan passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 at the Hospice House. He was born March 17, 1937 in Grand Rapid to Harold and Vera (Luplow) Mankin. On April 12, 1958 at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church, Mike married Mary E. (Eenie) Schley who preceded him in death on December 9, 2005. Mike worked as a heavy equipment operator for Goodwin and Sons Excavating and Picket & Skewer Excavating as well a owning and operating Magnum Motors Snowmobile Shop in Allegan before moving to Cheboygan with his family in the early 70's. He then worked for several area businesses including Kirk Mankin Excavating before retiring in 2005. He was a member of the Cheboygan Eagles and the National Rifle Association and enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the casino with Eenie, spending time at hunting camp with his children and grandchildren and telling a good joke. In his younger days, Mike also enjoyed racing stock cars and set several records at speedways in both Allegan and Kalamazoo. "Mad Man Mike Mankin" was awarded a special tribute at the Kalamazoo Speedway for his racing accomplishments. Survivors include his five children, Michael, Jr. (Kim), Kimberly Mankin, Shawn (Mary), Chris (Stephanie), and Jan (Terry) Franz, all of Cheboygan, his daughter-in-law, Christine Mankin of Cheboygan, one sister, Merry Greene of Allegan, 13 grandchildren, Michael, Tony, Heidi, Russell, Katie, Eddie, Ashley, Derek, Shawn, Danielle, Zac, Briana and Caitlyn, two great grandchildren, Laci and Landin LaLonde, his in-laws, Ruth Schley, Judy (Jim) VanParis, Helen Boyea, all of Cheboygan, Barry "Butch" (Cheryl) Schley of Detroit, William (Pat) Schley, Jane (Bob) Boyea, Don (Marlene) Schley, David (Becky) Schley, Virginia Roush, Lee (Landa) Schley, Lois Simmons, Catherine (Bob) Scarborough, Michelle (Todd) Woiderski, Girard (Barbara) Schley and Mary Schley, also all of Cheboygan and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Eenie, Mike was preceded in death by his son, Kirk H. Mankin, his brothers-in-law, Ken Greene, Gerald Schley, Joe Schley, Harold Boyea and James Simmons and a nephew, Gerald D. Schley, Jr. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 from 2:00 - 8:00 pm at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home with a Scripture Service beginning at 7:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 11:00 am at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Megge officiating. Burial will take place in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Mike's name may be directed to the family.
