Rebecca Holton Raper Austin died on Sunday, November 11, 2018, in Roanoke, Va.

She was born on December 16, 1928, in Lexington, N.C, a daughter of Ruth Holton Raper and Joseph Fitzgerald Raper of Asheboro, N.C. A graduate of Greensboro College in 1949, she married John William Austin II of Roanoke, Va., on September 9, 1953. The Austin's owned an employment agency for 30 years and managed family properties in Rockbridge and Botetourt Counties. After 12 years of service, Mrs. Austin retired from Carilion Health Systems in 2002. Always interested in family history and genealogy, the Austin's researched and wrote a history of 60 Botetourt County families, in 1977, published by Genealogy Publishing Company, Baltimore.

Throughout her life, she was involved in various community service agencies including serving as President of the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. As a member of the Col. William Preston Chapter, N.S.D.A.R., she served as Regent of the Chapter, and chaired a project of the Chapter to publish two volumes of biographies of notable Southwest Virginia Women, available from the Southwest Virginia Historical Society and the Chapter. Mrs. Austin was also active in St. John's Episcopal Church and enjoyed singing in the choir and participating in the Episcopal Women's work of the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Carol of Washington, D.C.; and by her husband, Bill, in 1991.

Mrs. Austin is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Bordon J.M. and Mary Laura Austin of Winston-Salem, N.C., J. William B. and Laurie W. Austin of Morgantown, W.Va., and Holton R. and Jennifer Hollingsworth-Austin of Roanoke; and three grandsons, William I. Austin of Morgantown, W.Va., and Conner G.H. and Declan J.H. Austin of Roanoke.

Memorial Services will be conducted at noon on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Mary Mackin officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. Online condolences may be expressed at www.oakeys.com.
