Bob Goldwater, known as the "Father of the Phoenix Open" and a member of one of Arizona's most influential Republican families, died Saturday morning at his Phoenix home surrounded by family and friends, his son said. He died of natural causes at age 96.

Goldwater is the brother of the late Barry Goldwater, the five-time U.S. senator from Arizona, and the father of Don Goldwater, who lost his bid for the Republican nomination for governor in September. "He passed the way he lived - full of life," Don said. Bob Goldwater died at 10:05 a.m. in bed in his living room,4 looking
out to the Phoenix Country Club golf course while his wife, Maggie, was by his side, Don said. "He was a great father with a phenomenal sense of humor," Don said.

Bob Goldwater, who was born in Phoenix two years before Arizona received statehood, was the second son of Baron and Josephine Williams Goldwater. After graduating from Phoenix Union High School, he attended Stanford University, where he earned a degree in business at age 20.

Goldwater helped start Frontier Airlines and served as president of Goldwater's department stores for years, Don said. He also is credited with making the Valley the golf mecca it is today. Goldwater was a past big chief of the Phoenix Thunderbirds, the civic organization that runs the FBR Open, formerly the Phoenix Open. The avid golfer also was past chairman of the board for the Phoenix Country Club.

He will be cremated and his family plans to hold memorial services at Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix, Don said.

Goldwater also is survived by three other children, Bob Goldwater Jr.,Sally Goldwater and Lynn McGowan, and nine grandchildren.
